, so of the debate watchers have noted, president obama didn't bring it up in the debate when he had a chance, talking about the economy, talking about all these folks who are unemployed or underemployed, and it would seem to indicate that president obama was saying that this was not worth pursuing. he certainly had used it on the campaign trail. it's been used in ads. but standing there on the debate stage, he apparently made the choice that it was unworthy of him and unworthy of the audience. will joe bidenring it up next week in his vice presidential debate? he may. we'll find out. >> it might have been a strategy, too. maria what do you think? >> i actually think it was a missed opportunity, randi. he should have brought it up. but i will guarantee you that democrats, including joe biden, will absolutely continue to bring it up, because after he said he thought he was wrong, or before he said he thought he was wrong, he doubled down on those remarks two or three times before he realized it was really hurting him in the polls. and we're talking about latinos this morning. majority
the debate and of course, the election. both president obama and governor romney had seasoned debaters and experts say neither are prone to making major gaffes. but if there is one thing that history has taught us, when it comes to presidential debates, expect the unexpected. joining us now to talk about the moments and debate magic yet to come, republican consultant romney 2008 campaign advisor, alex castellanos and donna brazile. a lot of folks are saying these debates are do or die for romney. donna, do you agree? >> absolutely. first impression is very, very important. mitt romney had several opportunities to change the trajectory of the campaign, his selection of a running mate, paul ryan, got a small bounce. the convention speech didn't get any bounce, and now the first debate. this is like the first night on broadway. there will be more voters tuning in, they will be looking at his performance and if he comes across as somebody who is credible, who is up to the task, he might get another bounce out of it. >> aren't undecided voters the least likely to tune into the debates? gall
obama calling debate preparations a bit of a drag. saying his campaign team is making him do his homework. downplaying the expectations. we heard a lot of that from both sides. joined now by former new hampshire governor john sununu. he served as chief of staff under george w. bush. i read a quote from a white house spokesperson and she says he hasn't had time, the president because of the demands of the office, to work too much on debate preparation. what are your thoughts on that? >> spin, spin, spin. let him start spinning why his 3 1/2 years have been a failure. this is an important event. debates are important. the two candidates will stand side by side and the voters are going to get a chance to evaluate. and i can't believe how hard the white house is working to spin that the president, a, is not very goods, and b, that he had no chance to prepare. that's called buying two insurance policies in case he sceud up in the debate the way he screwed up as president. martha: your candidate has been dragging in ohio, michigan, and he's behind in florida where he was once ahead. wh
in between. going into this debate, this really was not and in between the situation where president obama was ahead. governor romney desperately needed to shake this race of. something had to change the trajectory and this election. it needed to be something very substantial. here we are now at this momentous event. it was in the realm of debates. this is certainly much more decisive, i think, then pretty much any other debate that any of us can remember. i thought governor romney did a fabulous job on both a relative basis. quite fabulous and on a nominal basis. he did very well. i think it is true to say that superiorbama is 8 superia orator and i think mitt romney is a superior debater. it occurred to me that this reminded me of the mitt romney i met in 1994 when he was running for the senate. he met with me. he was incredibly impressive and fact driven. he was a very pragmatic. obama seemed like -- i wouldn't say smug, but someone who did not seem terribly hungry for it. i do not think there is any question that when you look at some of the -- and i am not really big on these polls --

month. this is a big symbolic lift for the obama campaign after that really bad debate. they had the jobs numbers on friday and this today. it helps the campaign reassure their base and their supporters that hey, things are going on track. jim messina, the obama campaign manager sent out an e-mail touting the numbers. it reassures the base, saying forget about the debate. the people are with us and we have the money to carry the campaign forward. >> sometimes timing is everything. how crucial is this boon in cash collections with just a month to go before election day? >> it's tremendous. again, the debate was one thing, but the campaign is being waged in a series of battleground states on television airwaves, in mailboxes. really trying to reach voters. the romney campaign has said they have been saving up a bunch of money for this last sort of stretch. this money also shows that the obama campaign really can count on small donors and online fund-raising and raising money from text messages. they had started doing that this year, too, in a way that the romney campaign cannot. re

of us were waiting this week for mitt romney and barack obama to connect with reality, to connect with the lives we actually live. it didn't happen. the 90-minute debate went by, for example, without a word about immigration. not a thing said about the countless people trapped in our muddled policy. and this in colorado, a swing state, where both romney and obama have been courting the large hispanic vote. that wouldn't have happened if my guest on this week's broadcast had been moderating the debate, but their participation was rejected by the tiny group of insiders who set the rules. that's a shame because george ram mows and maria elena sorena are two of the most popular journalists. they work for the most important spanish language network in the country, univision. i met them for the first time earlier this week when they were in town to receive the emmy award for lifetime achievement from the national academy of television arts and sciences. here's part of the video presentation that introduced them to the emmy audience. >> they're two of the most well-recognized journalists
